Mascot costumes can be used for so many different things. From corporate events to dressing up for the holidays, they are not the same guises once worn so many decades ago. The lucky team talisman has changed over the years and so has the costume.

The word mascot has its origins in the meaning of luck for a household. In France, anything that brought a home good fortune was considered a lucky talisman. The word also harkens to words such as spell. Some luck talismans are inanimate objects while others are based on animals. Some are even just a slogan that a company or business is known by. Anything that brings luck to a group that has a public identity can be considered its mascot.

There are many famous and well known mascots. The U. S. Marine Corps is known for its bald headed eagle but also its bulldog. The Phillie Phanatic and the San Diego Chicken are popular sports characters that have been rallying their fans to push their teams to victory since the 1970s. Costumes often play huge roles in sports rivalries. A university fraternity stole a team costume from their rival sports team, but the costume was returned after two weeks and while the event raised the spirits of many students, it was frowned upon as crossing the line of friendly rivalry between schools.

In highschool, everyone dreads being chosen to play the role of the mascot. In days of old, the costume was tight, dark, sweaty and hard to move around in. Today’s costumes are much more flexible and are built to allow not only movement but flexibility. Mascots can dance, perform tricks and get closer to fans than ever before.

Some costumes are equipped with cooling units. A special vest can be worn under the costume, holding cooling packs against the wearer’s body. A simpler version of this is the kold collar, which uses special material slipped inside a neck collar to keep the whole body cool.

Good mascot costume manufacturers will do more than just sell someone a costume. Mascot wearers can be taught how to perform in the costume of their choice.
